Senior Capstone Project: Rethink Criminal Justice Website

From August 2020 – December 2020, the senior Communication class worked together to build http://www.rethinkcriminaljustice.com. This site examines multiple areas of social justice issues within the American criminal justice system touching on economics, mental health, marginalized groups, juvenile justice, and police and power.

As a project leader, my job was to assist students in the mental health and juvenile justice section do research, pick topics and edit their content. All students were required to interview three sources and produce audio, video and text assets. My topic consisted of mental health sources provided to individuals incarcerated.

As well as working on my own individual piece, during Spring semester 2021, the project leaders worked to enhance the site by creating more interactive, informative content. Click here to view a step by step process and timeline.

Over 2 million individuals living with mental illness sit in jail and prison each year. Many are not equipped to provide adequate resources for individuals incarcerated. Montgomery County Correctional Facility in PA is working towards advancing and improving their mental health services.

Preventing Suicide in Prisons and Jails

America’s jails are known as the largest mental health institution in the country. Dr. Lucas Malishchak, the director of the Psychology Office for the Department of Corrections, has worked extensively to improve all state prisons in PA by providing advanced training programs to all staff and updating suicide prevention programs.
